Kandhamal of Orissa is in hot headlines for enmity between the followers of two religions: Hindu and Christian. The politico executive and judicial administration wants us to believe that it is a case of communality. But in reality it is a case of religious nationality.

The peoples of India have suffered the separation of precious parts from the body of their motherland in 1947 as it was a prerequisite for independence on August 15 on the ground of religious nationality when the Muslims, multiplied on this soil through conversions claimed to be a separate nation as against the nation of the Hindus.

With formation of Pakistan, Hindustan lost a great portion of its national asset and has been in constant loss due to the terrorism practiced by Muslim converts at the border.

So rise of another religious nationhood through multiplication of Christians by conversions has become the crux of alarm for the Hindus as the Christians, by concept and in practice belong to a religious nationality, as they themselves want others to know by projecting their religious head, the Pope, as a Sovereign Head of State.

It is politically significant that the Pope, because of being the Pope, is being projected and treated as a Sovereign Head of State.

This understood, there is no difficulty in understanding why everywhere in India Hindu activists are trying to bring prodigal children back to their homes through counter-conversions.

Every Hindu may act as a counter-conversionist if thereby his motherland could be saved from another division on religious nationality.

Laxmananand was such a counter-conversionist who had concentrated in Kandhamal.

Unknown assailants, who, in local perception, are Christians, have killed him

So attack on Christians by Hindus in that district is a counter-attack.

A man, face wrapped, projected as a Maoist, has told a private TV channel that members of his organization have killed Laxmanananda to obstruct religious revivalism. This assertion is being read as a Christian mischief to hoodwink the general public. This is simply because, peoples know, the Maoists cannot find any difference between a conversionist and a counter-conversionist as both of them are religious revivalists. So killing of Lamananand alone on reason of religious revivalism cannot be accepted as an act of the Maoists.

In the circumstances, it is easily inferred that the Christians of Kandhamal received the counter-impact of their own mischief after the cold-blooded murder of Laxmananand.

The assassinated Hindu activist was unambiguously the strongest obstacle that the Christian missionaries were facing in converting Hindus to Christian religion in the region. And he was killed.

The Hindu agony is increasing beyond tolerance as the Governments, both in the State and at the Center, have failed to find out the assassin of the man who had sacrificed his worldly comforts to conduct counter-conversion to obstruct the rise of a rival religious nationality again on the soil that has already suffered the disadvantage of division of the motherland by converted Muslims at the time of independence.

The Christians have gone to the Supreme Court of India through a PIL seeking orders for inquiry into the assault on them by the CBI.

Suppose the CBI takes over the case, should that automatically end the unrest?

What is the crux of their allegation that they need the CBI to inquire into? As they say it is the assault on Christians. But in reality the issue is not the assault on the Christians; the issue is counter-assault on the Christians.

It would therefore be wrong to inquire into the counter-attack before the attack is inquired into. Therefore the ghastly murder of Laxmananand should first be inquired into before any inquiry is ordered into assault on Christians.

And the assault on Christians being a counter-assault, should, instead of expenditure of so much official energy on it, be left to be settled by the Christians themselves through credible pledges that they would do everything to wipe out the feeling that they are building up a Christian nationhood like the Muslims of pre-independence era.

As long as this feeling is not wiped out, the Hindus of Hindustan cannot be, even at gun point of Police, obstructed from taking any step, including violent steps, to preempt any possibility of a fresh division of their motherland on the ground of religion.

It is absolutely wrong to say that the majority (Hindu) community has assaulted the minority (Christian) community in Kandhamal. The concept of community is a wrong concept. The correct phenomenon is that a portion of the citizenry has assaulted another portion of the citizenry and the later portion has mounted a counter assault on the former. And in this specific instance, minority amongst the citizens (Christians) assaulted majority amongst the citizens (Hindus) by killing Laxmananand and by building up a minority religious nationhood, in retaliation to which the Hindus, being the majority of the citizenry, have, if at all, mounted their counter-assault.

This had to happen. Majority citizens cannot sit mum when motherland is infested with the viruses of minority nationality.

This scenario is really painful. It would never have happened had all the religions been banned after adoption of the Constitution of India.

Every religion was a societal code that was controlling man’s behaviors vis-à-vis the Society. With framing of the Constitution these codes called religions should have been stored for sociological study only. But shortsighted politicians have played the nastiest of mischief by allowing them to control human behavior in free India. So these religions have become rivals to our Constitution and their followers have linked these codes to their respective religious nationalities.

This being the fact, Christians constitute a rival nation vis-à-vis the Hindus. Hindus form the majority. India is a democracy. Democracy is run by majority. So India as a democracy belongs to the Hindus. But Hindus have never misappropriated India for themselves. Though they were the majority in the Constituent Assembly they framed a Constitution that resolved to build up the country as a secular democracy. They gave full freedom to practitioners of their rival religions to treat India as their home and to practice their religion without obstruction. But nowhere they had said that the practitioners of their rival religions should be allowed to expand their religious nation by dragging away members of Hindu religion to their own.

In view of this every conversion since framing of our Constitution is absolutely unauthorized and blatantly illegal.

The Cuttack Archbishop’s PIL has given the Supreme Court a great chance to dive deep into this matter. The active practice of religion should be seen as active denigration of the Constitution inasmuch as the Constitution being the supreme code of conduct, parallel or rival codes of conduct cannot be countenanced.

It should be made clear that by secularism the framers of the Constitution had only meant that there should be no bar in practice of the religions by their respective followers’ families. But they had never meant for keeping the State mum when certain religions would try to encroach upon others.

If the Supreme Court gives real serious attention to the issue, it should nullify all conversions with retrospective effect from the day of the adoption of our Constitution. And put a blatant ban on emergence of religion as nation.

Words like protection to minority may look magnanimous, but if minority religions take turn towards becoming minority nations, the majority of the country’s citizenry will never sit silent. They must fight that design come what may. Because, to the Hindus of Hindustan, any possibility of further division of their motherland on basis of minorities’ religion-nation can never be acceptable.

So, let us be very clear that Kandhamal is not a case of communality as is being projected; it is a case of religious nationality.

Taking over from superannuated Director General of Police Sri Gopal Nanda, the new DGP Sri Man Mohan Praharaj has put priority on ending communal conflicts in Kandhamal.

Communal conflicts are not absolutely criminal in character. Hence how can Sri Praharaj lead police to end them?

Every peace-loving and patriotic citizen must want that there should never be any communal conflict. But utopia has nowhere come true. And, Kandhamal is no exception.

As I have discussed earlier, communal conflicts are religious conflicts. As long as every religion is not banned there shall exist different religions. Existence of different religions means existence of rival religions. Existence of rival religions means existence of rival communalities. Existence of rival communalities means existence of the fire of communal conflicts. Police cannot extinguish this fire. So the new Orissa DGP’s assertion that he will end communal conflicts in Kandhamal as his first work is mere sophomoric.

As the new DGP took over, curfew has been promulgated afresh in Kandhamal. This itself is the proof of the fact that despite earlier repressive steps taken by the police, communal rivalry has not ended as yet.

Orissa High Court has asked the Union to press more police to action in Kandhamal. The Judiciary is worried over continuing communal conflicts. But verdicts or judicial directions cannot terminate communal conflicts.

In Kandhamal, the ongoing communal conflicts are conflicts between the indigenous culture of immemorial age and an alien culture of recent origin. The conflict has aggravated since killing of Laxmananada, as persons who oppose the alien culture suspect the alien culturists to be the culprits, notwithstanding Naxal claims that he being a religious revivalist and a stooge of local mafia they have under notice executed their death sentence on him.

Both the police and judiciary have failed to catch and punish the culprit(s) so far. The blatant inability or deliberate negligence of the law and order machinery to catch and punish the culprit(s) that killed the known antagonist of the alien culture is surely instigating the indigenous culturists to avenge the killing by taking the suspected alien culturists to task the way that suits them and how can this be stopped before the culprit(s), who killed Laxmanananda is/are punished?

Congress autocrat Sonia Gandhi, born a Christian, being the supreme boss of the central minister that holds home portfolio, the police controlled by IPS officers of central service like Praharaj may unleash state terror on indigenous culturists of illiterate Kandhamal in the name of law and suppress the conflict. But that would be mere suppression. Suppression is not extinguishments. So, even if the present communal conflict in Kandhamal will be suppressed, communal rivalry will not die.

This is the danger to our democracy that needs urgent attention.

The illiterate peoples of Kandhamal have given a golden opportunity to administration to understand this danger so that correctional measures may be evolved. But it seems the failed political leadership both in the state and the center, concerned only with their careers and tenures, are not interested in India’s future and hence, they want to manage the instant scenario with the muscles of the police force.

More baffling than this is the intelligentsia’s total failure to study the real cause of communal conflicts.

As stressed supra, existence of rival religions flares up communal rivalry. If peoples are not addicted to religions, wherefrom communal passion would surge and communal conflicts emerge?

Why should peoples be addicted to religion? As I have told earlier in these pages, despite brain and virtues, human beings by birth suffer from a sense of insecurity to overcome which they form their society or nation and cherish societal or national solidarity. Nationality is the collective formation of the peoples of a geographic unit to ensure economic stability. Economic stability of all of the society is ensured by elimination of all process or factors of exploitation. The state that eliminates exploitation and ensures economic stability is epitomized in terms of unreserved allegiance of its peoples. This allegiance is termed as political nationality. When anti-people programs of the state shatter economic stability of the peoples, political nationality dwindles and the peoples in search of collective identity to overcome inherent sense of insecurity build up or revive their cultural solidarity, which is expressed in the name of religion. So religion is a pervert expression of peoples’ anxiety to have a collective identity in order to overcome their inherent sense of insecurity or in reality the fear of economic insecurity and therefore, all the religions are pervert socio-economic formulations. Every pervert formulation is susceptible to control by schemers. So the schemers, who use the strength of solidarity amongst peoples under their control for factually their own economic benefit in the guise of the peoples’ economic stability, patronize and control every religion. This being the position, different religions compete with each other to expand their support base so that economic empires of their respective patrons would expand. In Kandhamal, political nationality having dwindled due to continuous state support to economic exploiters, the religious nationality has raised its ugly head as the substitute and in the specific circumstances, competition is going on between the Hindu and Christian schemers to keep the area under their grip. Hindu schemers are known saffronists who work for business community of India when Christian schemers having their fountainhead in foreign lands are suspected shadow workers of imperialism.

If economic exploitation of our peoples will stop, both these religious schemers shall have no impact on the minds of our peoples and political nationality will revive to extinguish communal conflicts.

Politicians will fail to bring out this as they have en mass lost their credibility. The new DGP can play a positive role if he directs his police force to eliminate economic exploitation of the peoples. It is well known and he can, if he wants, see that all the welfare programs are being derailed as traders, contractors and bureaucrats hand-in-glove with unscrupulous politicians are looting the allotted funds. He as the police chief can intervene and arrest these scoundrels without delay. He can take stringent punitive action against caste supremacists in Hindu religion to stop socio-economic exploitation and this will stop exodus of people from Hindu religion to Christian religion. He can investigate and find out the time and cause of conversion of Hindu members to Christianity and under the anti-conversion Act in force can start stringent action against the Christian conversionists while moving for legal nullification of the so-called conversions so that the unholy competition between communalists of both the Hindu and Christian sectors would stop.

Laws of the land have given him enough power to take these steps. If he fails to do this and in stead, takes steps against peoples who emotionally join either sector in search of collective security in view of administration’s blatant failure in preserving political nationality that a real welfare state could only have given, he will fail and be seen as fallen in the trap of a confused concept.

But for conceitedness Navin should be able to read the writings on the wall.

He is no more enjoying the confidence of the people. Any delay in dissolving the Assembly will only help the BJP to grab Orissa, because spangled with American agents, Congress will not be able to gather support in Orissa and thus there will be no alternative to BJP, notwithstanding vested-interest votes BJD may bag in ensuing elections for the urban bodies.

Navin has stopped the twenty BJP rebels from voting against him by using the central leadership of the communal party. But communal conflicts in Orissa have not stopped. As seen in Jeypore, communal hatred has engulfed students even.

Communalism is not a law and order issue by origin. So law and order authorities – the police and the courts – cannot extinguish communal fire. Chief minister Navin Patnaik’s sophomoric litany that law will take its own course will not apply to communalism.

Communalism is not born out of criminality. So law and order implementation authorities cannot eliminate it.

Communalism is born out of religious nationality. Religious nationality cannot be neutralized as long as all religions are not banned.

In a country like India where leaders play populist politics, religions cannot be banned and hence religious nationality will grow more aggressively and in corresponding malignancy, communal conflicts too.

Acting on a litigation to end communal conflicts in Orissa, the judiciary seems to have expressed deep concern leading to issuance of certain direction to the government for restoration of peace. It is sad to note that the judiciary at this juncture has no ability to extinguish communal fire. Why, let me say.

Despite brilliant brains and expertise in acquiring power, every human being is a born victim of a sense of insecurity. So it needs a collective identity to feel secured. This collective identity is nationality. This is why there is not a single person in the world who does not belong to a nationality. Sense of insecurity makes highly educated and well-placed persons join the nationality of countries to where they migrate. Some of these migrated persons have even dual nationalities. So, there is none sans nationality in the human society. Nationality is the base that a human being cannot discard.

Nationality has two interlinked but separately distinguishable spheres: political and cultural. When political nationality looses its relevance, persons seek security under cultural nationality.

In India, specifically in Orissa, political nationality has lost its relevance day by day due to increase in economic inequality and decrease in social security amongst the people as the state power has constantly and consistently stood with the exploiters of the land’s natural and human resources in nonchalant disregard to disadvantage of the working class, marginal and small farmers, landless jungle-dwellers, small traders and autonomous social forces like the craftsmen.

Political leaders are so treacherous that the country has already been pushed into American hegemony as witnessed in the matter of the nuke deal that erstwhile party in power – BJP – had initiated and the party currently in power –the Congress – has precipitated.

Therefore peoples’ faith in politicians has severely declined leading to decline in political nationality.

This decline has got pervert expression in regional and sub-regional chauvinism as witnessed in bifurcation of original provinces. UP-Uttarakhand, MP-Chhatisgarh or Bihar-Jharkhand bifurcations are instances that were caused by regional chauvinism than by administrative necessities. Bifurcation of Orissa’s thirteen original districts to thirty is an instance of populist politicians siding with sub-regional chauvinism. There are instances when sub-regional chauvinism has precipitated internecine quarrels amongst local innocents over finalization of the locations district headquarters.

All these factors, often overlooked, are behind loss of relevance of political nationalism in our soil.

Against this backdrop, cultural nationality is getting stronger amongst the economically exploited people. Cultural nationalism is in applicability religious nationalism.

The exploiters are using religious revivalists to use religious nationalism to their own advantage. They are profusely patronizing religious revivalism, as is seen in high concentration of wealth in the hands of so-called god-men.

The only work the god-men do is aimed to generate amongst the exploited people a sense of self-hatred by prompting them to hold their supposedly sinful previous birth responsible for their present suffering.

Because of these god-men peoples fail to see the mischief of exploiters and looters of their exchequer. And, in their sub-conscious, political nationality gets further weaker.

Such a development being totally detrimental to democracy, conscious political activists have been trying to educate the ignorant peoples in matter of their economic and constitutional rights. It is a shame that these activists, who are campaigning for reduction of economic inequality so that faith in political nationality no more falters, are being termed as leftist terrorists and prosecuted against by the state, sometimes ending in encounter deaths. Media under grip of plutocracy is actively collaborating with the perpetrators of state terrorism against the pro-people activists and there are instances when judiciary has preferred not to be less harsh in the name of law and order. Under such circumstances, majority of our people fail to feel the benevolence of political nationality. They rather feel that they are victims of exploitive supremacy of the political state and hence political nationality has lost its meaning to them.

Naturally, therefore, religious nationality has gained ground and religious revivalists have emerged as societal arbitrators. Through pervert interpretation of secularism, the plutocratic state is protecting and patronizing these religious revivalists, who taking advantage of decline in political nationalism are tactfully using religious nationalism to usurp state power that further strengthens plutocracy.

But plutocracy under the present phenomenon called globalization has two internecine components that we can call national capitalism and international capitalism. In our country national capitalism has its ally in Hindu religious nationalism and international capitalism has its ally in Christian religious nationalism.

Political outfit of the Hindu religious nationalism is BJP that had so far been in rivalry with the religion of Muslims in Pakistani context. The Hindu religious nationalists thus engaged against Muslims have failed to notice how sharply the Christians have built up their religious nationalism in India, specifically in the belt of Hindu lower castes.

The Christian tactics of retaining Hindu names has helped it proceed as silently as predators move to engulf their preys.

Ever since Sonia entered into Nehru’s daughter’s family, Congress infested with sycophants of this particular family, has shown support for Christians by hoodwinking Indians in the name of secularism. Dismissal of J.B.Patnaik’s government a short while before elections in strong display of disapproval of alleged Hindu atrocities on Christian conversionists in Orissa is a pointer to this.

With Sonia as its supreme boss, congress now stands as political muscles of Christians even as international capitalism metamorphosed in USA trade design in India has got the Sonia led Congress as its strongest stooge.

So rivalry in Orissa’s soil between Hindu religious revivalists and Christian religious conversionists culminated in propagated annihilation of Christian conversionist Graham Stains in Mayurbhanj and proven annihilation of Hindu counter-conversionist Laxmanananda in Kandhamal is in fact the manifestation of rivalry between the two types of capitalism in their competition to grab the Indian soil and its resources for exploitation by the true beneficiaries thereof, the private profiteers.

Unless the state resurrects political nationalism and banns private wealth accumulation, the foul game that national capitalism and international capitalism now play on our soil in the name of religion cannot be stopped and/or eradicated.

What will happen?

With political nationalism dwindled, peoples will madly rush into religious nationalism and wherever whichever religion has the majority support-base will grab political power.

Indian Christians can never go against their life springs flowing in the foreign lands and conscious children of Indian soil will never like foreign hegemony. So, Sonia’s Congress will fail politically and even though BJP is the other side of the ongoing economic offense against the country, it being the political outfit of the users of Hindu religion that comprise majority of Indians at the moment, will rise more vigorously, specifically in Orissa.

I believe, BJP has studied this phenomenon clearly and hence has cleverly been instigating communal conflicts. Courts may issue wishful directions to dissuade communalism but unless religions are banned, religious nationalism cannot be stopped from growing and then in a state like Orissa where Hindus form the majority, who can stop BJP usurping power?

Chief Minister Navin Patnaik should pause and cogitate.

He should stop use of state terror against political activists who are trying to give the downtrodden working class the voice they need for their economic rights and instead of working for POSCOs and Jindals, should work for restoration of faith of the peoples of this state in political nationalism.

As I understand, when a novice in politics, he could not but fall in the trap of Subas Pani & Co of the IAS syndicate that has pushed him into the labyrinth of POSCO and other minegrabbers’ network from where he does not know how to escape. I understand, he is surrounded by sophomoric political hoodlums that have entered into BJD in shameless display of sycophancy and have ruined peoples’ faith in political nationalism.

But despite all his failings, he has shown matchless political guts in risking wrath of colleagues by dismissing ministers on ground of corruption. No other Chief Minister so far in Orissa had embarrassed so many senior IAS and IPS officers by subjecting them to vigilance raids and compelling them to suffer ignominy of enforced idleness. So, he may be kept under trial for a fresh term in hope against hope that peoples’ magnanimity may prompt him to correct the wrongs he has committed by siding with national and international industries to the detriment of farmers of Orissa.

If he dissolves the Assembly and terminates his alliance with BJP, the communalist party of traders and seeks a fresh mandate, I am sure, he will win, as peoples of Orissa will not opt for Congress, the party of American lobbyists. But if he does not do this, I am afraid, BJP will proceed to further flare up communal nationalism by posthumous use of Laxmanananda and eventually grab Orissa. If that happens, it would be the start of a sad phase in Orissa’s life.

Subhas Chandra Pattanayak

A stalwart of Hindu religious revivalism Laxmanananda Saraswati has been shot dead while resting in a female child asylum at Tumudibandha of Kandhamal district along with five others at about 8.30 in the evening of August 23.

RSS alleges that Christian religious fanatics have killed Laxmananand who was very active in foiling their attempts to Christianize the tribals and hence was in their hit list.

Orissa has experienced a lot of communal conflict due to religious revivalism. Laxmanananda was a known agent provocateur whom the Law and order authorities a few months ago had prohibited to enter into Phulbani in order to contain communal carnages.

Plutocracy, ushered into India by Manmohan Singh infested Congress and pampered by profiteers’ political organ BJP, is eager to keep the jungle-dweller tribes subdued forever as it is only they, who can valiantly resist the spread of industry and trade that needs to grab their land and to destroy their environment to proceed and profit.

Therefore plutocracy is apprehensive of a tribal uprising, specifically as, abandoned by mainstream politicians and exploited by local bureaucrats and middlemen and contractors and moneylenders and traders, they have got a strong ally in the left-wing ultras that the exploiters and their pet media go on projecting as Naxals or Maoists. The left-wing ultras have given the tribes their voice to raise demands for their economic rights and as evidenced in spread of Naxal influence from district to district, the poor peoples’ voice of demand for their economic right is stronger day by day. This is fidgeting the scoundrels that are exploiting the peoples.

As this new phase of peoples uprising is getting more defined, the precipitators of plutocracy are using a two-pronged strategy. One, they are using state exchequer to instigate armed forces to annihilate the left-wing ultras in blatant contravention of the civil laws in force and two, they are encouraging religious revivalists to confuse peoples into the fold of fate so that plutocracy gets a good shock-absorber to surge ahead. This is why in Orissa’s tribal areas where left-wing ultras are active, religious revivalists are seen aggressively active.

When the armed forces engaged against left-wing ultras are not ready to block the poor peoples’ demand for economic rights, the religious revivalists are intrinsic to plutocracy and are active supporters of plutocratic power play as plutocracy for survival fully depends on existence of God or Gods that the religious revivalists create, propagate and protect.

So religious revivalism is a political game aimed at putting exploiters in power. No game is a game if rivals are not there. Naturally therefore, there is bitter rivalry between the Christian and Hindu fanatics in Kandhamal and similar other places. Hindu religious chauvinists are marked for their support to Indian capitalists when Christian religious fanatics are active collaborators of foreign capitalist interest in India. There rivalry is not religious but in the guise of religion it in reality is a politico-economic rivalry that in other words may be said as national versus international rivalry in serving the system of exploitation. No wonder, it is bitter.

This bitter rivalry has led to death of Laxmanananda. If anybody is to take note of this, it is the religious revivalist of all hue, primarily.

They should note that if their foul play against poor people in the name of religion does not stop, time will come, no God would come to their rescue as Laxmananand’s God has notably failed to save him. As dinosaurs supposedly killed each other and got extinct, the religious revivalists would kill each other as bloody stooges of politico-economic rivals both in the national and international arenas.

Orissa’s Tumuribandha may just be the beginning.
