Modern Media’s Body Selling Mentality in full Display in Sambad: Whither our Journalism?

Subhas Chandra Pattanayak

A tainted leader of Orissa’s ruling party, which is home to many corrupt fellows, died. Till his death, he could not establish that he was not a punishable offender.

He was Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s blue-eyed-boy, his cabinet colleague, his guide and his top preference for the Upper House of India’s Parliament.

Therefore, he was the leader of the BJD wing in Rajya Sabha. He was Kalpataru Das.

But, as is said, “Time and Tide wait for none”, the Time enjoys its own freedom to act as it likes. It sometimes randomly beams light into the dark sanctuary of criminals and they get exposed.

This happened to Kalpataru. He was earlier noted for many acts of corruption. But his latest nefarious involvement in land and housing scams as well as in chit fund got unexpectedly exposed in August-September last year. He had to resign from BJD leadership in the Rajya Sabha on September 12, 2014 and the BJD “supremo” had to “appoint” superb user of hockey stick Dillip Tirkey in his place, though, despite this, he continued in Rajya Sabha to the full enjoyment of privileges of the Parliament.

Till death, as is noted above, he could not establish that he was not a felonious offender.

Orissa’s mainstream media house “Eastern Media Ltd”, the owner of which Sri Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, who aspires to lead the political State, was a major carrier of information on Kalpataru’s three exposed offenses noted above in its flagship ‘The Sambad’. But, it was not limited to that. In course of updating, it had raised the question as to why his earlier offenses are not being investigated into for penal prosecution.

Body selling of newspapers has become so much the practice under houses that publish newspapers for money, not for guarding the democracy as its sentinel, that the same newspaper ‘The Sambad’ of the same “Eastern Media Ltd” of the same Soumya Ranjan Patnaik has forced upon the people of Orissa the same Kalpataru Das as “Yuga Purusa” (the best person of our time). Whither our journalism?

Sambad on Kalpataru copy

Prostitutes sell their bodies for money, now newspapers do. What a magic of plutocracy! What a shame! What a degradation for money!

Newspapers are owned by business houses guided by avarice. People who bear the cost of production and because of whose support ads come, revenue multiples, media owners fetch profit, have no control over the contents.

How the people will take it?

I find the feeling of the people in a poem written instantly by former Banker Tusarkant Satapathy who, post retirement, has emerged a social activist and an accomplished columnist.

Here is this poem:

Tusar babu on sambad ad of 4.8.2015We will appreciate if Eastern Media reacts.

  3. It is so disgusting that the same ” SAMBAD ” wrote regarding the misconducts barely a year ago of the same now departed soul.

Mr. SAMBAD editor, you must be left with some civil-SHAME so as to react at the EARLIEST and let us know of your depth of Journalism at this crucial CALL OF YOUR DIGNITY and standing as the most circulated larger than life NEWS PAPER of the PROUD ODIAS !!!! !!! !! !

  4. Pattanyak Ji, I have written a small article about your site in my blog.please see here.

<a href="“>I like this Orissa blog very much..!I have been reading for about some years, can’t say exact year started reading it,but it must have been three years back roughly.Almost I would check once for a week to read this informative website. It is written by Subhash chandra Pattanayak. The best thing is he updates very regularly with the inputs of matters of Orissa and other current issues along with other cultural items. His style of writing is most congenial to read and assimilate. One could know a bird’s view of many interesting things. Many posts are well reserched.Definitely that worth reading in a serious way to reckon.Whether it was about the controversy of Lord Jagannath in Puri as it was in reality an idol of Buddha and was tantra tradition changed to the present state of worship or the disclosure of felonies happening in Orissa and other place as well.Cultural issues are widely discussed regarding many contexts. And one could know ample facts about Orissan politics, intricate less known things, literature and many things a sane mind could enjoy to read.In fact, myself a Telugu one but no way related to Orissa state but I am very much associated with this site by reading every post.If there is one site from each state like this how wonderful it would have been to know all varieties of special things which naturally most of the mainstream papers ignore or give less priority.Hope you agreed with me,if you go through once.

    • Dear friend Mr. Murthy,
I find my words absolutely inadequate to thank you for appreciating this site and sharing your views through your blog. You win my heart and my soul when you write, “If there is one site from each state like this how wonderful it would have been to know all varieties of special things which naturally most of the mainstream papers ignore or give less priority”. Dear friend, I am simple speechless, knowing not how to express my heart before this matchless expression of love for the motherland. I humbly salute you. Subhas Chandra Pattanayak

  5. Dear All ! I am compelled to comment on this posting for reasons best explained next. The ‘media made’, ‘money made’ Yug Purush belongs to my locality. Our families share very good relationship, in spite of that I was keeping considerable distance from him for his all misdeeds. Sri Subhas Chandra Pattnayak has rightly made the pace what this so-called Yug Purush deserves through Tusharkanta Babu’s versatile poem. Again Mr. Murthy has located this piece and judiciously posted in his website. Thanks Murthy-jee. You have been doing a great job in sharing electric minds of our beloved country. I adopt your opinion on Sri Subhas Chandra Pattnayak and also hope – when you like people will be coming out in mass from all corners, our beloved India can be emancipated from neo-colonials.
