If Maharathi Resigns on Moral Ground, Where has Gone the Morality of the Chief Minister?

In reacting to resignation of Pradip Maharathi from the Council of Ministers in the context of Pipili gang rape case, Opposition stalwart Bijay Mohapatra has asked: if Maharathi has resigned on moral ground, where has gone the morality of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who despite being the Home Minister has not acted against the crime since 2008?

PCC President Niranjan Patnaik has termed Maharathi’s resignation as a drama enacted to save the CM’s skin.

The crime was committed in 2008 and since then the criminals are not punished. Even though the criminals are alleged to have gang raped the Pipili girl to the extent of suffocating her into coma under violent brutality in their nefarious design to eliminate every possibility of her deposition in the court, the police refused to act and the Home department controlled by the CM continued to ignore its responsibility in the matter. Therefore, if any body should quit on moral ground, more than Maharathi, it is the Chief-cum-Home Minister Naveen Patnaik, points out the PCC chief.

Pipili Felony: Agriculture Minister Resigns as Chief Minister is Eager to Save Skin

Subhas Chandra Pattanayak

Agriculture Minister Pradip Maharathi has finally resigned from the Council of Ministers.

In Pipili gang rape case, he had tried to intimidate the Press when his name was mentioned in reports reflecting the version of the brother of the rape victim. In reaction thereto, the whole of the State perishing under misrule, barring the ruling party beneficiaries, had stood solidly with the media giving birth to Orissa Gana Samaj where all non-BJD political parties, without using party flags, were one with media persons, women organizations, students, youth and NGOs in condemning the crime and demanding immediate resignation of Maharathi to whom needle of suspicion as the protector of the criminals was strongly pointing.

Maharathi has resigned on moral ground.

But to the opposition parties, this is a drama enacted as the Chief Minister is eager to save his skin as the Home Minister. The Government needs be dismissed for having collaborated with the crime so far, they say.

Every Material Published Is Public: US Should Disallow SOPA and PIPA

Subhas Chandra Pattanayak

Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP (Intellectual property) Act (PIPA) are two Bills the United States House of Representatives and the Unites States Senate are respectively besieged with.

If adopted, the laws, projected as efforts to stop copyright infringement by foreign websites, “will actually infringe free expression while harming the internet”, says Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that almost all online knowledge-seekers visit the world over.

To make the Internet users of the world aware of the damage the bills will cause to peoples’ right to ready reference on topics of their interest, the makers of this online encyclopedia have blacked out the English Wikipedia with effect from midnight of 18 January for 24 hours.

Explaining as to why the blacking out is justified, the free encyclopedia authorities say:

Wikipedians have chosen to black out the English Wikipedia for the first time ever, because we are concerned that SOPA and PIPA will severely inhibit people’s access to solely affect people in the United States: it will affect everyone around the world.

Why? SOPA and PIPA are badly drafted legislation that won’t be effective at their stated goal (to stop copyright infringement), and will cause serious damage to the free and open Internet. They put the burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small sites won’t have sufficient resources to defend themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn’t being infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won’t show up in major search engines. And, SOPA and PIPA build a framework for future restrictions and suppression”.

How legislative wisdom guides the US law makers in this matter is a matter to be watched.

But to us it occurs that anything published by any author – including media persons and administrative personnel – should have no copyright component at all.

After publication, while acknowledging the original author, every published material must be recognized as public property with inherent eligibility to be shared by the peoples across the world so that the mistakes therein could be corrected in course of readers’ interaction or the correctness thereof could be more defined to help expand the knowledge of the peoples of the world.

Therefore, we fully endorse the unique protest the Wikipedians have raised against the two anti-knowledge bills.

Attack on Freedom of Press Exposes Government as Anti-People: Prasanta Patnaik

(input from Manoj Kant Dash)

Eminent journalist Prasanta Patnaik called upon media community to act unitedly for protection of democracy, when the government of the day is failing in its duty in this regard.

Consecrating the evening to the second day of Mahanagar Mahotsav at Ganjam Kala Parisad, Berhampur, on 17 January, the veteran media man came down heavily on the environment of infringement on freedom of Press, the pivot on which democracy gathers its strength.

By subjecting media persons to cooked up cases in order to frighten them away from exposing anti-people activities of administration, democracy is being pushed into doldrums by the very persons that are required to serve and strengthen democracy. This syndrome must be extinguished by use of alert pens and lenses that the media persons are equipped with, he said.

Amongst others who graced the occasion were Ranjan Tripathy, Bhubaneswar Bureau Chief of Kamyab TV / Manojkant Dash, Editor-in-chief of Odishabarta.com / Rabi Rath, Editor of Navin / Siba Prasad Mishra, Advocate / Susant Sabat, social activist / Rajesh Mohan Patnaik, Advocate / Biswanath Patnaik, Secretary of the Mahanagar Mahotsav Committee and Susil Patnaik, Managing Director of Assu India Parivar that sponsors the Mahotsav. Convenor of the Mahotsav, senior Advocate Sudhansu Sekhar Panda was in the chair.

Odishabarta.com chief Manoj Kanta Dash coordinated interaction of local media persons with Patnaik, when the Mahotsav was anchored by Surya Narayan Patro and Kartik Panigrahi.

Sri Patnaik was felicitated on behalf of the Mahotsav Committee and Assu India Parivar.
